Had to pick between a big team layoff or a company-wide pay cut last year

Our company was facing a serious cash crunch and I had to make a call. The choice was letting go of 15 people from my department or cutting everyone's salary by 10% for six months. I went with the pay cut, thinking it would keep the team together. Honestly, it was rough for morale at first, and I lost two senior people anyway. But we made it through the six months and were able to hire back for three of the roles we lost. Has anyone else been in a spot where you had to pick between two bad options to keep the company going?

That's a brutal choice to have on your shoulders. Keeping the team together was a decent call, even with the rough patch. Glad you made it through to the other side.

Yeah, "rough patch" is putting it mildly... that kind of pressure can eat you alive if you let it. When I had to keep a crew together through a bad quarter, I started doing quick one-on-one check-ins every morning just to see who was struggling. It helped catch the little frustrations before they turned into someone walking out.

Yeah, those kinds of decisions really stick with you. Sounds like you handled it as well as anyone could.
