I spent 3 months building this detailed dashboard for our quarterly review in Chicago, full of charts and projections. When I presented it, she just asked me one thing: 'What's the one problem we fix first?' She didn't even look at the graphs. Has anyone else found that simple questions cut through more than all the data you pile up?

Debate: Do you lead through chaos or structure? My week had both.

Last Tuesday our biggest client threatened to walk after a pricing error. I spent the morning calming everyone down and the afternoon redoing the contract by hand. Then Wednesday was completely dead, no fires, nothing. It made me wonder which style actually works better long term. Do you handle problems as they come or do you plan out every move? Has anyone else had a week that flipped back and forth like that?

Back in 2008 I was a junior VP at a midsize tech firm in Charlotte, and I had to present our quarterly numbers to the board. I was so nervous I spilled coffee on my notes right before walking in. The CEO, this older guy named Frank, saw me panicking in the hallway. He just sat down on the floor right there and said 'Come join me, we'll figure this out together.' He spent 10 minutes helping me reorder my thoughts and told me a story about his first big presentation where he threw up in a trash can. When we finally went in, he introduced me with this calm confidence that made everyone relax. I've never forgotten how he treated me like a person first and an executive second. I was in a strategy session last Thursday and the CEO kept stopping the discussion to zoom in on font sizes. We had 11 slides to review and 45 minutes. Two slides got actual content feedback. The rest was about margins. I get wanting things to look good but we missed talking about a 3 million dollar revenue risk because everyone was afraid to interrupt.
