Saw a CEO spend 20 minutes on a slide deck font size during a board prep meeting

I was in a strategy session last Thursday and the CEO kept stopping the discussion to zoom in on font sizes. We had 11 slides to review and 45 minutes. Two slides got actual content feedback. The rest was about margins. I get wanting things to look good but we missed talking about a 3 million dollar revenue risk because everyone was afraid to interrupt. Has anyone else dealt with a leader who just cannot let go of the small stuff?

I read this stat last week from a Harvard Business Review survey that said 67% of executives say their biggest time sink is dealing with personality conflicts, not strategy or operations. That hit me hard because I run a small plumbing crew and thought the drama was just a blue collar problem. But then I got to thinking about my last big commercial job where the project manager and the site foreman couldn't stand each other. I spent three days smoothing things over just to get a bathroom line installed. For real, if 2 out of 3 execs are babysitting grown adults, what are we even paying them for? Has anyone else found that the higher up you go, the less gets done because everyone's too busy protecting their turf?

He kept saying the guy had a bad attitude, was always late to the morning meetings, and would argue with the crew. I told my COO that the guy could lay a perfect ridge line faster than anyone and never got a callback for a leak. Finally gave in after 3 weeks of back and forth. So I let him go. Fast forward 6 months and my callback rate on new installs jumped up 40 percent and the crew morale is way better. Turns out one toxic guy even if he's good at his job can poison the whole team. Have any of you had to let someone go who was technically great but just a bad fit for the culture?

Honestly, I was team 'promote from within' for years. So when our COO left, I pushed for our ops director, who had been here 8 years. We gave her the role, and within 3 months she was drowning in the strategic stuff - she just couldn't step back from the daily grind. Then we hired an outside VP from a competitor in Portland.
