Just realized my client thought homemade pickles were a fair trade for cleaning
She handed me a jar of dill pickles after I finished her spring clean, saying it was from her garden. I had to gently explain that my business runs on actual money, not preserves. It's funny how some people still see services as part of a trade economy. I've started mentioning payment methods upfront to avoid these awkward moments.

My neighbor once tried to pay me in zucchini for moving a couch.

How do people always end up paying with stuff from their garden? I'm the worst at this because I never know how to say no to weird offers. Last time I helped a cousin move, I got a box of peppers that were too spicy to eat. @henry101, your zucchini thing is so familiar it hurts, since I once ended up with ten pounds of potatoes. It's like once someone thinks you'll take food, they stop even asking about cash. I try to be clear now, but I still end up with random produce that I have to figure out how to use before it goes bad.

My late aunt did this with her sewing. I had to write "cash only" on my business cards to stop the jam trades. You just have to state your price first thing now.
