My accountant friend in Chicago said I should stop chasing every single client

We were having coffee last Tuesday and he pointed out that I spent 15 hours last month on proposals for people who clearly just wanted free advice. Honestly, it made me realize I might be confusing being busy with actually building a sustainable business. How do you decide which leads are even worth a first reply?

How do you even tell the difference at first? I had the same problem. Now I just ask a couple quick questions before I write anything. If they can't give me basic info like budget or timeline, I move on. Saves a ton of time. Your friend is right, free advice seekers will drain you dry.

My old rule was to give everyone three free questions. I once spent 45 minutes diagramming a supply chain for a guy whose "project" was just a class assignment. Now my first question is always about their approved spend.

Grant's right about asking those quick questions first.
